What we do - Community
GVC organises a number of activities in the Community with Cludo Club gaining popularity over the last 29 years. For 20 years, Challengers Week has run during the evenings of Cludo Club and is specifically aimed at teenagers. We regularly take part in Portishead community events and enter a float each year in the carnival and a raft in the raft race. Read more about the other community activities that we are involved in below.
On Friday 14th December Portishead held it's annual Victorian Evening. This year GVC hosted a puppet show, dressed in Victorian costume, had a stall and joined the other churches singing carols and walking the donkey.
Gordano School Pond brought back to Life
During the winter of 2011/12 members of GVC restored the Secret Garden Pond at Gordano School.
Dave Francis, GVC Team Leader, approached Head teacher Mr.Lewis last year to ask if there was something the church could do for the school that we hire each week as we wanted to give something back to the school. Mr Lewis mentioned the disused pond and so the pond project was born.
Dave Francis says “We have had a lot of fun working together on the project and are happy to be able to say thank you to the school for the use of their facilities.” The team of volunteers from Gordano Valley Church had to clear the surrounding area before tackling the actual pond. They cleaned out the pond, replacing the plastic lining and introduced aquatic and marsh plants. The project was completed by laying wooden decking to give easy access to the water. The pond is now home to a variety of animals including frogs and newts.
In thanking the Church, Business Manager, Clare Sanders said: “Many thanks to you and your team for all the hard work you have undertaken on the pond in our Secret Garden. It is much appreciated by the school and I know how much the pupils will enjoy investigating pond dip samples and learning about how animals and plants are adapted to aquatic life."
The Mad Hatter's Tea Party was the theme for GVC's float for 2012. See the pictures and experience the event. The Carnival is always a highlight in the social calendar in Portishead.
Churches in Portishead invited the community to a free lunch at the Lake Grounds on Sunday 3rd June to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Joining with the national Big Lunch initiative, over 3,000 people were served food and a programme of family fun and entertainment was laid on.
Nativity at Noah's Ark Zoo Farm
Animals from Noah's Ark Zoo Farm joined with a cast of 60 children and adults from GVC in December.
"Picture Perfect Christmas", a modern take on the nativity, was held in the Barn at Noah's Ark Zoo Farm. The story followed a photographer trying to get the perfect photo for his Christmas cards and was watched by an audience of over 800 people.
GVC enters a team into the Portishead Raft Race each year - spectacularly, the best result has been obtaining the trophy for "Best Sinker" in 2011.
